A similar detail is available from wijma for when the i joists are oriented perpendicular to the rim joist. Set the ends of the rim joists against the house and screw the l brackets into the sheathing. Install the ledger between the rim joists and fasten it to the house with 3 inch decking screws. Dia galvanized or stainless steel lag screws in every other joist space alternating up and down positions to keep the ledger from splitting.

To install the clip you drive a nail at an angle through the hole in the vertical neck of the clip and on through the decking and into the joist. If necessary create spacers by attaching pieces of decking to the top side of the frame that goes against the house. Another nail ties the clip directly to the joist. There is no support below it.

The easiest way to do this is to remove the existing house rim joist and soffit and any insulation inside the cavities. The problem with attaching a deck to a cantilevered floor is that there is nothing below the cantilever overhang to keep the rim joist at the house from pulling loose. If you don t want posts and a beam at the house side of the deck then you ll need to run the deck joists into the house floor joist system so the ends rest on top of a bearing wall or mudsill inside. For wood decking using deck clips the first board is nailed or screwed to the joists as above.

Anchor deck joists to the ledger with joist hangers filling each hole with galvanized joist hanger nails rated for pressure treated wood. When i was framing floors with i josts in the late 80s engineered rim board was not available and we closed the rim with either an i joist or 3 4 inch plywood ripped to the i joist height. Predrill and sink 1 2 in.
